Division: Introduction (Division as Repeated Subtraction)

What is Division?

Division is splitting a number into equal parts. It is the opposite of multiplication.

Example: If you have 12 apples and want to divide them equally among 3 friends, how many apples will each friend get?

You can find the answer by repeated subtraction:

12 apples

Step 1: Subtract 3 apples for the first friend. 12 – 3 = 9

Step 2: Subtract 3 apples for the second friend. 9 – 3 = 6

Step 3: Subtract 3 apples for the third friend. 6 – 3 = 3

Step 4: Subtract 3 apples for the fourth friend. 3 – 3 = 0

Answer: Each friend gets 4 apples.

So, 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Solved Examples

1. 6 ÷ 2

6 apples

Solution: Subtract 2 apples at a time.

6 – 2 = 4, 4 – 2 = 2, 2 – 2 = 0

You subtracted 2 apples 3 times.

Answer: 6 ÷ 2 = 3

2. 8 ÷ 4

8 apples

Solution: Subtract 4 apples at a time.

8 – 4 = 4, 4 – 4 = 0

You subtracted 4 apples 2 times.

Answer: 8 ÷ 4 = 2

3. 10 ÷ 5
